Why I do what I do.
I genuinely enjoy helping people and finding creative solutions to problems. I love learning about your life and truly try to avoid small talk. I would rather jump right into learning about your favorite book, your best IPA recommendation, or why you decided to move to rural California on a whim. Hearing your love story or your excitement for the business you are starting up makes my heart swell, and it is my honor to play a small part in this current chapter of your life.

Me.
My name is Emily Stotter, and I am a simple yet analytical soul. I appreciate the way things were done long before everything was automated and two-day shipped -- when we had to get our hands dirty and make the food we ate and didn't create so... much... waste. My nostalgia for decades past manifests in my life as a love of bread and pasta making, canning, raising backyard chickens, writing letters on my retro typewriter, restoring my antique letterpress, my collection of vintage albums, the ancient thrifted YALE sweatshirt I've had since 2003 (no, I didn't attend Yale), and gardening -- among other loves (yoga, sushi, craft beer, and t-r-a-v-e-l).

I grew up on a chicken farm in Pennsylvania and dreamed of moving to the big city. I got my BS in Apparel Design at the University of Delaware (along with a minor in Spanish and a graduate certificate in Socially Responsible & Sustainable Apparel Business -- tongue twister!). I did a stint as a designer in NYC for a bit (lived in a series of teeny tiny apartments) and realized the hustle and bustle (and the fashion industry) just wasn't for me. Freebird Paperie began as a daydream while chugging along in my cubicle in downtown Manhattan. Every lunch break (and sometimes not on lunch break, sorry boss!) I would longingly scroll through the blogs of my favorite stationery designers and letterpress printers. In 2010 I took the leap and started this new adventure.
I now live on a 3-acre "farmette" in rural Pennsylvania with my sweet, often crazy-making family: Zach, my husband since 2015; our son, William (born in 2016); our daughter, Lillian (born in 2018); and our pets Lucy (a black lab, border collie mix) and Katie (our fluff ball cat). We've also got a flock of egg-laying chickens and ducks as well!
