How to Say "No Kids" On Your Wedding Invitations

How to say no kids on your wedding invitations
If you're hosting an adults-only wedding, you've probably realized that it can be a sensitive topic. It can be tricky to find a balance between clearly stating who isn't invited while still being sensitive to your guests' feelings.

I've compiled my favorite ways to both imply and directly state that children aren't invited to your wedding celebration for you, so your invitations are clear and polite!

Envelope Addressing

The first place that you can clarify who is invited to your wedding is on the envelope for both your save the date and invitation. This is also a great tip if you are having trouble clarifying plus ones!

  • "Mr. and Mrs. Jones": Addresses a married couple, implies no one else in the family is invited.
  • "The Jones Family": Implies the entire family is invited.
  • "Mr. Jones and Ms. Smith": Addresses a specific couple, implies no one else is invited.
  • "Mr. Jones and Guest": Addresses a guest and a second person of their choice, implies that Mr. Jones could bring whomever he likes.

RSVP Cards

How you address your wedding invitation can help to specify exactly who is invited, but sometimes guests dispose of these before reading them. Additionally, it can be difficult to address an invitation to a family in which some adult children are invited, but young kids are not. A solution for both of these is to specify the number of reserved seats on your RSVP card. On most RSVP cards you will see the phrase, "We have reserved __ seats in your honor". Fill in this blank before you send out the invitation! This is where you will specify how many guests in this household are invited.

Stating it on the invitation

If you are still concerned about certain guests not getting the memo about it being a child-free wedding, the best option is to state it outright on the invitation. A great way to do this on a traditional invitation is to state, "Adult-only reception to follow," after the wedding details. The one catch about this wording: a guest could potentially believe that their child was still invited to the ceremony, as long as they don't attend the reception.

On your Wedding Website

While I believe that all of the most important information about your wedding day should be on your invitation suite, your wedding website is the perfect spot for explaining that your wedding is going to be child-free. Most wedding websites will have an FAQ page, and the very first question should be, "Are my kids invited?" There are tons of respectful ways that you can answer this, but these are my two favorites:

  • "Although we love your children, this is an adult-only event."
  • "To allow all of our wedding guests, including parents, a night of relaxation and celebration we respectfully ask that children under 18 do not attend."

A GREAT ALTERNATIVE?

Regardless of how politely you state that children are not invited to celebrate with you at your wedding, there's a chance that someone will be upset. It can be difficult to find a sitter, or maybe they weren't planning on the extra expense, or don't feel comfortable traveling without their children.

A fantastic solution to this, which still allows you to have your child-free wedding, is to hire your own sitters! If your guests are booking a room block at a hotel near your wedding venue you can book extra rooms or conference space for all of the kids and some trusted sitters for the evening. Order them some pizza and cupcakes, and they can have their own party that doesn't interfere with your adults-only event. While it does put an added expense on you, it is a fantastic service to offer for friends and family who have children that aren't able to attend.

For some couples, hosting a wedding that is adults-only is very important, but it can be a tricky world to navigate. Including consistent language throughout your wedding invitation suite and on your wedding website is key to avoiding any unwanted guests at your wedding.

While every wedding is unique and should be handled as such, I hope that my guide helps to limit the stress around clarifying your wishes to your guests!

Josh and Alexandra's Wedding at Minerals Hotel

Being a part of Josh and Alexandra's wedding last year was an absolute dream come true! They came to me with an incredibly detailed wedding plan already in place, and they knew exactly what their stationery should look like to perfectly match the vibe.

Josh and Alexandra planned an incredible laid-back woodsy wedding at the Minerals Hotel, part of Crystal Springs Resort in Vernon, New Jersey. Their day was filled with pastel hues, hydrangeas, and greenery in an absolutely beautiful location. Unfortunately, as a stationery vendor, my job ends before the wedding day, but Josh was kind enough to send me details and photos of how their day turned out!

Their wedding was a weekend getaway for their friends and family, without having to go far from home. They hosted their guests from Friday evening to Sunday and really gave the event the feel of a destination wedding. On the day of their wedding, they had an outdoor ceremony in the garden of the Minerals Hotel before they headed over to the stunning Sweetgrass Pavilion. Josh noted that the open-air pavilion was a crucial part of the wedding - allowing even the reception to feel like it was part of nature while still being protected from the elements. And of course, they brought the greenery inside as well! "The most unique part of our wedding was having a 6 foot in diameter flower chandelier directly over the dance floor. This was the centerpiece of the wedding."

ABOUT THE COUPLE

Tell me the proposal story!:

I had been planning our annual trip and that year we were headed to Peru. Once the outline of the itinerary was completed, i had the idea of finding a time on the trip to pop the question. After doing some thinking and speaking with out travel planner, i decided i would do it while at Machu Picchu. To be flexible, i spoke with our guide ahead of time and we decided there is not set place but he would give me the nod when he noticed an opening as there can be a lot of people there. Luckily for me, it was almost the first thing that happened and it was magical!

What do you love the most about your significant other:

I love that we tend to be different and have different views on many subjects. This makes us grow and think together. It forces us to communicate and listen.

What was your favorite part of wedding planning?

My favorite part of wedding planning was after booking each vendor, you started to see a vision of what is coming. The build up was great.

What would you change about the wedding or wedding planning if you were able to?

I was not unhappy about a thing but if i had to improve on something, i would have tried to catch my breath at times. It goes so fast and if you don't stop for a second and look around, you miss a lot.

Josh and Alexandra came to me with a specific but totally unique wedding invitation request - a long, skinny horizontal invitation with a tear-off RSVP card. My favorite detail? The Volkswagen Bus illustration they requested! It was inspired by the VW bus photo booth that they hired for their wedding, and it's definitely an addition I'll never forget.

I had so much fun designing their stationery with these two, and I'm so glad I get to share their amazing wedding day with you all! Josh and Alexandra - thank you so much for choosing me to be part of your big day, and I wish you both the best!

Choosing the Right Flowers for Your Spring WeddinG

Flowers can set the tone for your whole wedding, so it's important to choose something that matches your overall wedding aesthetic. If you're looking for a classic, romantic look, try bouquets with neutrals like lilac or anemone. Or, if you want something a little more colorful, tulips and hyacinth are lovely choices! Tulips, daffodils, and freesia are some of the most affordable flowers, so they're great for couples with a tight floral budget. If you're looking to support local agriculture, foxglove, goldenrod, and iris are all native to Pennsylvania and would be amazing additions to a unique bouquet! Ultimately, it's up to you to decide what kind of flowers you want for your big day, but with so many beautiful options available, you can't go wrong.

Wedding Floral Trends

Our friends at Gilly's Lilies see so many couples and wedding trends during wedding season each year! We asked what the recurring trends in spring 2022 are, and what they think is coming for spring 2023. The response? After a few years of really neutral floral trends, spring 2022 has seen a move towards more bright and colorful boho vibes! And in 2023 couples are leaning toward dried florals. While the micro-trends may be changing, it doesn't look like the boho aesthetic is going anywhere fast!

Budgeting for Wedding Flowers

We know that for many couples, the biggest hindrance to fulfilling their floral dreams is their budget. So, we asked our friend Sarah, the owner of Gilly's Lilies how she suggests going about making a floral budget.

"I think the overall budget as a whole should reflect what people are comfortable with spending - we are willing to help with any budget. I feel with a wedding, for example, you should have a budget priority for the bouquets and boutonnieres for the wedding party. What you have remaining in the budget can be slightly adjusted to fit the other needs of importance, for example, tablescapes and wedding arbors. Also, asking your florist what items can be reused for the event helps."

About Gilly's Lilies

Gilly's Lilies is a floral design studio based in Mifflinburg, Pennsylvania. Owner Sarah grew up in the UK, where her family ran a floral shop. Her very first job was sweeping the floors in her uncle's flower shop, and she quickly fell in love. After going to college and getting a degree in Art & Design, Sarah discovered how her hobby of working with flowers could meld so well with her fine art skills - and Gilly's Lilies was born!
This year Sarah opened her very first brick-and-mortar shop! In her own words, "Our shop is giving the community different flower options and designs, and we also like to connect local in-season blooms to our wedding couples and customers as we buy from local growers who I feel are important for the community."
We hope that this guide to spring flowers helps you in your wedding planning process! Thank you so much to Sarah for helping us!
